The Foundations in Learning believes that educators need easy-to-implement literacy interventions to help struggling readers, especially those in middle school and above.
That’s where WordFlight can help. WordFlight is a personalized reading intervention program for grades 3+ that goes beyond the Science of Reading, using the Science of Learning to bridge the gap between phonics and fluency.
With a Fluency Innovator Grant, you’ll receive:
- Screener – Quickly identify students struggling with foundational reading skills.
- Diagnostic – Track progress and personalize learning with the only patented assessment that provides visibility into each student’s decoding, generalization, and automatic word recognition skills—the best predictors of fluency.
- Instructional Program – A full, four-month subscription to WordFlight. Leverage adaptive technology to provide personalized, structured practice to your students in an engaging game-like environment.
- Resources – Implement WordFlight to fit your classroom needs with teacher-directed lesson plans that support explicit instruction in a multi-tiered system of support framework.
- On-Going Support – You’ll receive a tailored implementation, on-going customer support, and professional learning to fit your needs.
Eligibility Criteria
Foundation invites educators in grades 3+ who are passionate about helping their students achieve fluency.
- Teachers: You may apply for your class with admin approval.
- Administrators: You may apply for your school building.
- Find a friend! Schools and districts with more than one application will be given highest priority.
- You must be in a US-based school that is not currently using WordFlight and has not yet received a WordFlight grant.
Grant Requirements
- At least 15 students must participate. You can select students who fit into the following profiles:
- Students in grades 3-8 who are at risk for reading failure, or have had one or more years of intervention and whose difficulty with word recognition skills interferes with reading fluency and comprehension.
- English Language Learners (ELL) who participate must meet a standard for conversational English language usage.
- Special education students and students with dyslexia may be eligible for participation if the implementation and follow-up process for these populations is collaboratively agreed upon during the planning process. You can use our free screener to identify students who will benefit from WordFlight.
- Teachers must ensure that students use WordFlight’s online component 20 minutes per day for 4-5 days per week throughout the grant period or until they either complete the program.
- The school must provide suitable technology to permit students and teachers access to the online system (check the basic technology requirements).
- The school must enable staff to participate in implementation planning and professional development sessions.
- Participating teachers will be asked to complete brief, periodic surveys at two or three points during the grant.
- Grantees will permit the company to use data and participant feedback to assist future product development and to share and celebrate (de-identified) grant results with the public.
- Current customers and/or former grant recipients may not apply.
