The IMF strives to help the neighbors in the Washington DC metropolitan area and communities around the world emerge from poverty and crisis by supporting community initiatives through partnerships and annual monetary grants which focus primarily on fostering economic independence through education and economic development. The IMF believes that people are empowered through education and economic opportunities within their communities and seeks to build capacity and provide access to programs and services that enhance personal growth and development.
On a local and regional basis, they only fund non-profit organizations registered under section 501(c)3 of the US Internal Revenue Code that serve the people and communities in the Greater Washington Region, which includes: (i) the District of Columbia; (ii) Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in the State of Maryland; and (iii) the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church; and Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Eligibility Criteria
Restrictions
- Multiyear commitments cannot be made but organizations may reapply annually for grants. However, charities who received grants for three consecutive years will not be able to apply for the next two consecutive years.
- Grants will NOT be given to:
- Faith-based organizations are eligible to apply for grants provided that the requested funding is restricted to a secular project that provides needed social services to the community at large on a non-discriminatory basis without any religious teaching, directive, or requirements to receive services. These programs should be independently run, have a formal mission and a separate program budget.
- To complete this application, you will need the following materials:
- IRS Tax Exemption Certificate 501(c)(3) or equivalent certification if based outside the United States.
- Organization’s most recent audited financial statements (not older than 3 years)
- Program/Project budget information (covering at least the next two years)
- Measurable outcomes/Follow Up Impact Report (for your most recent year of IMF support- if applicable). Only required if your organization has received funding in the past.
