Grant funding will be awarded under each of the department’s divisions:
- Kīpuka Division – ʻŌiwi Strongholds: To safeguard and steward lands of concentrated natural and cultural importance to ensure enduring access to healthy natural resources and spaces where the community may thrive.
- Kumuwaiola Division – ʻŌiwi Resources: To champion and preserve the life-giving, life-sustaining elements of the natural world by defending and amplifying the conditions to ecocultural landscapes and vital native cultural resources.
- Pai Ka Leo Division – ʻŌiwi Voices: To revive and reinvigorate the use of Hawaiian language in government and in the larger community in sincerity and fidelity to both official languages of Hawaiʻi – English and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.
Funding Information
The average dollar amount of awards is anticipated to range from $25,000 to $50,000.
Grant Period
Twelve (12) months from execution of grant contract.
Criteria
Although the functions of the department are not clarified in the charter, the powers, duties, and function of the director are:
- Be the administrative head of the department
- Collaborate with the Mayor, the executive branch, and the council to ensure proper management of ʻŌiwi resources throughout Maui County
- Design and implement programs to care for and develop ʻŌiwi resources
- Guide the county in the correct usage of the Hawaiian language, including place names, and the integration of Hawaiian language in county functions
- Promote healthy ecosystems through natural-cultural resources regeneration, protection, and sustainable utilization
- Advise state and federal agencies on all programs and projects that affect ʻŌiwi resources in Maui County
- Report to the Mayor and Council annually on the county’s overall performance in meeting ʻŌiwi Resources objectives and any issues that could be addressed by ordinance
- Perform other duties and functions as assigned by the Mayor or Managing Director.
