The Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation (BCJI) Program is a strategic approach to crime reduction that leverages community knowledge and expertise by focusing on community-led efforts, working with law enforcement and other local partners to support prevention and intervention efforts on neighborhoods where crime is concentrated or crime “hotspots.” The BCJI Program is operated by the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
The Salisbury Police Department successfully applied for a grant from BCJI program as part of the West End Initiative. BCJI projects include:
- Leveraging community knowledge and expertise for crime reduction
- Local partners to support prevention and intervention.
The West End Youth and Family Summer Program Grant is sponsored by the $800,000 Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation grant which was awarded to the City of Salisbury Police Department.
Successful proposals will offer community-led initiatives and new ideas to promote neighborhood stability & safety, crime reduction and prevention in the West End neighborhood.
Priority Areas
- Youth & Family Development (i.e. mentoring programs, dress to impress)
- Youth and Family education (tutoring programs, GED classes, cultural history programs)
- Neighborhood Safety (neighborhood watch groups, gun safety classes, community violence intervention programs)
- Youth and community recreation (youth sports teams, senior physical activity, community recreation)
- Civic Engagement, Community Empowerment and Community Pride (Community groups, community outreach projects, community placemaking, community summer events)
- Neighborhood Revitalization.
Funding Information
These grants will range up to $20,000 in unrestricted funding for summer programs and activities to start in May and end by September 30, 2024.
Eligibility Criteria
- Rowan County based 501c3
- Unincorporated coalitions or groups can apply with a fiscal sponsor
- Religious institutions may apply
- Grant activities must take place between May-September of 2024
- Summer Grant Activities have to take place in the West End.
