Activate Your Space is an ancillary grant program to the popular Care-A-Lot program. Under Activate Your Space, applicants will be able to apply for grant funds up to $5,000 to transform vacant lots through the City. Activate Your Space is designed to provide the resources, education, and support to create unique, safe and publicly accessible community managed greenspaces. Importantly, Activate Your Space will prioritize applicants that incorporate at least 1 CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) strategy into their application.
The goal of applied CPTED strategies is to prevent crime by designing a physical environment that reduces opportunities for criminality by positively influencing behavior. There are four principles:
- Natural Access Control
- Natural Surveillance
- Territorial Reinforcement
- Stewardship
Eligibility Criteria
Projects must be neighborhood driven. The leadership must come from residents directly affiliated with the community. The project must have a team of at least 2 people to proceed and those people should be committed to assisting with the program for at least 1 year.
Applicants must meet all the following conditions:
- The applicant must be a registered IRS 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization and in good standing with the State of Maryland, per the State Department of Assessments and Taxation website
- If the applicant, is not a registered IRS 501(c) the applicant must identify a fiscal sponsor that is a registered 501 (c) 3 tax exempt organization that is in good standing with the State.
- The organization’s principal place of business must be in Baltimore City. If using a fiscal sponsor, that fiscal sponsor must also have a location in Baltimore City.
- All activities and expenditures under this grant must be provided in Baltimore City.
- Activities can only take place on Mayor and City Council of Baltimore owned lots, community owned lots, or lots that are protected by Baltimore Greenspace. Privately owned lots are not eligible.
