The purpose of the Façade Improvement Program is to encourage local businesses to improve storefronts / facades in eligible areas, and to promote commercial revitalization and economic development. The Façade Improvement Program is funded with revenues generated from local funds. The funds are deemed “Grant Revenues” and can only be spent on specific uses as allowed by law.
Façade Improvement Grant Revenues can be used for capital improvements only. The program will prioritize improvements on, or attached to, primary elevations (street level) of commercial properties.

Improvements to an individual business that amount to less than $1,000 or more than $5000 of FIP funding during a single award cycle
Eligible Expenditures
Examples of Eligible uses of grants include, but are not limited to:
- Signage
- Exterior painting
- Storefront Reconstruction
- Siding
- Exterior lighting
- Window and door upgrades
- Public-facing masonry or cornices
- Murals
- Removal of unattractive exterior finishes
- Roofs
- Sidewalks
Ineligibility
- Any improvements banned by local building codes or zoning
- Improvements outside of the Town of Oakland city limits
- Interior work
- Electric charging stations
- Solar panels
- Expenses incurred by the business prior to award of grant funding
- Predevelopment and operating expenses (such as acquisition, permitting, architectural services and design services) are ineligible uses of funding.
