These grants aim to promote sustainability and diversification within Maui Nui’s agricultural community, strengthening economic resilience while supporting the health of residents and ecosystems through natural resource regeneration.
Goals
- Developing a regional sustainable and diversified agriculture.
- Building economic resilience.
- Supporting the health of residents and ecosystems through natural resource regeneration and protection.
- Improving food security.
Grant priorities include:
- Agricultural infrastructure, operations and education
- Agricultural recovery
- Livestock management
- Feral animal control
- Support for Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi agriculture
- Production of traditional crops such as niu, kalo and ʻulu
- Non-food agricultural products including floriculture and forestry
- Other related agricultural areas
Eligible Projects
Grants will be awarded to programs or projects that show a direct benefit to Maui County’s agriculture sector through services or activities in the following priority target areas:
- Agriculture Operations/Infrastructure/Education
- Broad based agricultural programs that encompass all forms of operational support, promote the agricultural industry, agricultural infrastructure, and agriculture related educational projects, including aquaculture, and technological advances.
- Agriculture Recovery
- Mitigation and recovery damage from environmental aspects, such as wind, drought, flooding, fire, erosion, etc., including, but not limit to wildlife, animals, birds, and pests, invasive species, natural disasters and climate-related problems.
- Feral Animal Control for Lanai and Molokai
- Management and reduction of populations of wild or untamed domestic animals for water and environmental resource protection and conservation.
- Lanai and Molokai Agriculture
- Agricultural programs with emphasis on projects that support regenerative agriculture, sustainable crop production, promotion and marketing of agricultural crops. Line Item and Proviso Organizations and/or projects that have appropriation set forth by the Maui County Council in the 2026 fiscal year.
- Livestock
- Programs for livestock animals, non-food grazing animals, poultry, waterfowl, gamebirds, fish and aquatics, etc. as deemed appropriate by the Department that contribute to the County’s food security and improve subsistent agriculture and projects to establish production, maintain, improve, and protect animals.
- Non-Food Agriculture (Landscape, Turf, Flowers, Foliage, Hardwood trees, etc.)
- Non-food agricultural programs including but not limited to landscaping, floriculture, forestry, agritourism and ag-related cultural practices, etc.
- Production of Niu, Kalo, and Ulu
- Programs focused on production of canoe plants; niu (coconut), kalo (taro), and ulu (breadfruit).
