The U.S. Forest Service supports moving toward shared stewardship across Landscapes as part of a conceptual framework for making strategic investments across landscapes to co-manage wildfire risk and achieve positive outcomes at the most appropriate scale. Within this framework, Eastern Region Cohesive Fire Strategy Competitive Request for Applications is designed to support and carry out the first two goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy (NCS) across the Midwestern and Northeastern States as well as meet the intent of the current year budget direction. These first two national goals are:
- Goal 1: Restore & Maintain Landscapes
- Regional Option 1A: Expand the use of prescribed fire as an integral tool to meet management objectives in the Northeast.
- Regional Option 1B: Maintain and increase, where possible, the extent of fire-dependent ecosystems and expand the use of fire as a disturbance process.
- Regional Option 1C: Focus on mitigating “event” fuels to reduce potential fire hazard.
- Goal 2: Fire Adapted Communities
- Regional Option 2A: Focus on promoting and supporting local adaptation activities to be taken by communities.
