The Program was created in 2021 and seeks to support programs that address climate adaptation and resilience or enhance access to outdoor recreation or education.
Objectives
The Conservancy worked on the development of the CVMSHCP and since its adoption in 2008 has coordinated land acquisition efforts to create the reserve system required under the CVMSHCP. Various public entities and nonprofits that own and manage land within that reserve system of more than 109,000 acres. Many parts of the reserve system contain significant quantities of invasive species of plants and dry fuel that pose a significant risk of wildfire, which risk is increasing with climate change. The CVMSHCP includes a management program that prioritizes removal of invasive species and the restoration of native ones, but that work has only been partially implemented due to funding challenges. This RFP seeks to address that by offering grants to fund planning and/or implementation projects that address critical needs in implementing the CVMSHCP, including but not limited to the following:
- Removal of invasive plant species and the restoration of native species that provide benefits such as increasing biodiversity;
- Prescribed burns;
- Threat assessments, mapping projects, biological and cultural surveys, development of restoration plans, fire or forest management plans or related environmental compliance and permitting;
- Creation and maintenance of shaded fuel breaks; or
- Acquisition of wildland equipment for ongoing management such as command vehicles or trailers, tractors, drones, woodchippers, hand tools, etc.
Funding Information
The minimum grant amount is $2.0 million.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants include local or state agencies, federally- or California state- recognized tribes, or nonprofit organizations that own or manage conservation land under the CVMSHCP. Collaborative projects led by an agency with documented land management experience are preferred.
