The Hazard Fuels Reduction (HFR) grants are funded by the USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry branch, and are intended to fund fire risk mitigation treatments on non-federal, non-industrial forest lands.
Projects must seek to modify fire behavior through the treatment/reduction of hazard fuels and must take place within 1.5 miles of a federal project with similar fire mitigation objectives. This program is very similar to the Western States Fire Managers (WSFM) grant program with the following differences:
- Federal project adjacency requirement (as mentioned above)
- Education components of the project must be specific to the project area – no general education
- No match funding requirement (leverage funding is highly encouraged)

Grants of up to $240,000 each.
Eligibility Criteria
State and local agencies, non-profit organizations, tribes and educational institutions are eligible to apply.
