The purpose of this grant program is to achieve the USDA Forest Service’s program priorities and support the goals and objectives of the Michigan Forest Action Plan.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) Assistance Grant Program is made possible through funding provided by the USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program. The USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program supports initiatives that:
- Increase, enhance, and improve access to tree canopy and its benefits.
- Improve the resilience and sustainability of the urban and community forest.
- Support the active participation of the community in urban forestry planning, planting and care.
Funding Information
- Approximately $500,000 is available for the UCF Assistance Grant program.
- Grant requests must be between $10,000 and $75,000.
Grant Period
Projects must be completed by December 31, 2027, and final reimbursement request and supporting documentation must be submitted no later than January 31, 2028.
Eligible Activities
Projects must be urban forestry related and occur in communities identified in the Michigan UCF Assistance Grant Screening Tool. They must support goals and actions of the USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community program outlined above, the Michigan Forest Action Plan and other local/regional plans.
Eligible projects and activities include but are not limited to the following:
- Public tree inventory (must include an inventory summary analysis)
- Urban forest planning, including management plan, strategic plan, wood utilization plan, climate adaptation plan (must be paired with at least one implementation activity outlined in the plan).
- Tree planting and establishment/post-planting care
- Tree pruning
- Community engagement and outreach (survey, community events, etc.)
- Communication and education (signage, printed materials, app development, etc.)
- Capacity building (staff and volunteers training, hiring contractors/consultants, etc.)
- Tree and stump removals (must be paired with tree planting at a ratio of 2 trees planted for every 1 tree/stump removed)
- Nursery planning and establishment• Food forest planning and establishment.
