The Grant Program, along with the other components of the risk communications campaign, will address the need to involve and inform the public about the coastal hazards impacts they will face and what actions they can take to reduce their risk. To accomplish this, community-based organization around the coastal zone are selected through a Notice of Funding Availability and are partnered with artists selected through a Call for Artists. The community-based organizations and artists will work together to address the theme of climate resilience and coastal flooding through original, site-specific artwork and community engagement and events.
This program partners the New Jersey Coastal Management Program (CMP) with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (Arts Council) and is made possible in part with funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA)’s Enhancement Program Projects of Special Merit (PSM) program.
The purposes of the Grant Program are to:
- Increase public awareness of how individuals will be impacted by flooding related to climate change and what they can do about it;
- Use innovative approaches, outreach methods, and materials that are tailored to the needs of local communities throughout New Jersey’s coastal zone;
- Elevate awareness of the increasing effects and impacts of flooding related to climate change, including but not limited to storm surge, nuisance flooding, sea-level rise, sunny day flooding, etc;
- Advance resilience planning efforts in New Jersey through effective risk communication methods, materials, and actions; and
- Effectively communicate the necessary behavior changes that will make New Jersey more resilient to flooding related to climate change.
Funding Information
The total funding available for this grant program is $80,000. Each CBO is eligible to be awarded $20,000. Of that award, a minimum of $12,000 must be provided to the artist(s) the CBO is partnered with for the reimbursement of materials, development and presentation of the art installations, and for each artist’s time/fee. Up to $8,000 may be utilized by each CBO for reimbursement of its documented costs, such as staff time, location fees, and promotional materials.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Grant Program, each CBO applicant must either:
- Be incorporated in the State of New Jersey as a non-profit corporation [and in good standing] or be a unit of a government entity, college, or university; or
- Be tax-exempt by determination of the Internal Revenue Service in accordance with Sections 501(c)3 or (c)4.
