The field of forensic science is changing, particularly as technological advancements improve the criminal justice system’s ability to use forensic evidence more effectively and efficiently. Research is needed to better understand the impact of forensic science on the criminal justice system.
With this NOFO, NIJ requests applicants in two categories:
- Category 1: Social Science Research and Evaluation on the Forensic Science System
- Category 2: Evaluability Assessment of Crime Gun Intelligence (CGI) Resources.

- Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
- Small businesses
- Special district governments
- Independent school districts
- Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
- State governments

- Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
- Public and State controlled institutions of higher education
- Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities
- Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments)
- City or township governments
- Private institutions of higher education
- For profit organizations other than small businesses
- For the purposes of this NOFO, “state” means any state of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
