The Northern Trust Foundation is accepting applications for its grant program aimed at supporting low-income youth on Chicago’s South and West Sides. Grants range from $10,000 to $50,000 and focus on helping youth ages 16–24 through general operating support and targeted program funding.
The foundation is prioritizing four key areas: food security, affordable housing, educational excellence, and accessible healthcare. These efforts aim to address the root challenges young people face while helping them access essential resources and build stable futures.
In food security, grants will support programs that increase access to free food, promote participation in nutrition assistance programs like SNAP and WIC, and provide affordable, nutritious food in underserved areas. The goal is to reduce hunger-related barriers to education and health.
For housing, the foundation funds programs helping youth facing homelessness or unstable living conditions. This includes providing affordable housing options, support for foster care youth, LGBTQ+ youth, and low-income college students. Priority is given to efforts that help youth secure permanent housing solutions.
In education, the foundation supports programs that help students graduate high school, access post-secondary education or trade schools, and succeed throughout college. This includes financial aid guidance, academic readiness, and tools for navigating the college admissions process.
Healthcare funding supports organizations that provide free or affordable care, including mental health services, preventative screenings, and programs that remove barriers like transportation or limited hours. These services help youth transition from child to adult healthcare and improve overall well-being.
To be eligible, organizations must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofits providing direct services to youth ages 16–24 in Chicago’s South or West Sides. Funded organizations can receive grants for up to three consecutive years, after which they must wait one year before reapplying.
The deadline to apply is July 18, 2025.
