Details:

The program offers three nonprofits or public agencies $100,000 each in direct funding, as well as placemaking technical assistance and capacity building from the team, to transform a street or mobility hub into a lively community gathering place that improves street safety and mobility.

Types of Grants

  • Streets as Places
    • The Streets as Places initiative will focus on improving the street safety and usability of the site while adding or improving space for community gathering.
  • Destination Stations
    • The Destination Stations initiative will focus on improving rider experience and street safety while increasing the access to and awareness of mobility options through placemaking initiatives at mobility, transit, and charging hubs. Public transportation and bike stations are great candidates here.

Eligible Improvements

Streets as Places

  • Potential Physical Improvements:
    • Traffic calming measures (painted crosswalks, daylighting corners, etc.)
    • Interactive safety features
    • Ground murals
    • Seating and other public space amenities
    • Outdoor business displays and seating
    • Bike lanes
    • Parklets and street seats
    • Temporary plazas
  • Potential Programmatic Improvements:
    • Cycling and pedestrian initiatives
    • Open streets initiatives
    • Community activities and celebrations
    • Special events such as farmers markets and festivals.

Destination Stations

  • Potential Physical Improvements:
    • Seating and other similar public space amenities
    • Outdoor business displays and seating
    • Traffic calming measures (painted crosswalks, daylighting corners, etc.)
    • Wayfinding or information elements
    • Kiosks, game carts, or vending opportunities
    • Aesthetic improvements to create a welcoming space
  • Potential Programmatic Improvements:
    • Special events such as farmers markets and festivals
    • Community celebrations
    • Art events and performances
    • Social service provisions for people experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health crises.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The recipient organization must be a U.S.-based 501c(3) nonprofit or local government agency.
  • The project site must be an outdoor space that is free and open to the public.
  • The recipient organization must have the authority or permission to make physical improvements to this space.
  • The project falls into one of the two initiatives for this cycle: Streets as Places or Destination Stations
  • The project site must be a destination for people from across the city, town, or region. (However, the site does not have to be located downtown.)
  • The site must be located in Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, or Texas.
