Details:

The grants program has evolved over the years, with many improvements made along the way. Among the improvements have been aligning grants with the results of Mary Washington Healthcare’s (MWHC) Community Health Assessments (CHA) which are conducted every three years, the Social Determinants of Health, and other MWHC strategic initiatives.

The top three priorities and areas of focus which have been identified in the CHIP for which grants may be awarded are as follows:

  • Behavioral Health (with goals to increase access to behavioral health services including prevention, treatment, and recovery, and to improve behavioral health outcomes by minimizing risk factors and promoting protective factors)
  • Housing (with goals to establish and promote policies that ensure attainable housing opportunities for all, and to increase support and resources for those experiencing housing challenges.
  • Access to Healthcare (with goals to improve health service access, coordination, and collaboration to meet the needs of all members of the community, and to develop a comprehensive strategy and pipeline to increase the community’s healthcare workforce)

The CHA also identified five additional community healthcare needs for which grants may also be awarded:

  • Aging-related Concerns (including mental health, transportation, communication, elevated suicide, and chronic disease rates among older adults)
  • Behavioral Health (including both mental health and substance abuse)
  • Healthcare Utilization and Access (including access to primary care, dental care and maternal health care)
  • Physical Activity and Healthy Eating (including access to affordable healthy foods, exercise opportunities, and the connection to chronic disease)
  • Social Determinants of Health (including economic stability, education access and quality, healthcare access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context)

Finally, MWHC has identified two (2) additional objectives that are strategic priorities for the organization:

  • Increase healthcare workforce development programming to further enhance training, hiring, and development of healthcare workers.
  • Improve health opportunity by responding to identified social determinants of health on MWHC inpatient screening tool (food insecurity, housing, transportation, utilities, and personal safety)
