Authorized by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants program (often referred to as section 40101(d)) is designed to strengthen and modernize the power grid against wildfires, extreme weather, and other natural disasters.
Projects must fall into one of the following categories:
- Weatherization technologies and equipment focused on grid components and systems and
does not include weatherization of a facility or building - Fire-resistant technologies and fire prevention systems
- Monitoring and control technologies
- Undergrounding of electrical equipment
- Utility pole management
- Relocation of power lines or reconductoring of power lines with low-sag, advanced
conductors - Vegetation and fuel-load management
- Use or construction of distributed energy resources for enhancing system adaptive capacity
during disruptive events, including:- microgrids; and
- battery-storage subcomponents
- Adaptive protection technologies
- Advanced modeling technologies
- Hardening of power lines, facilities, substations, of other systems
- Replacement of old overhead conductors and underground cables, and
- Other measures as determined or approved by DOE
Funding Information
There is no minimum award amount, and the maximum amount for a single award is $3,000,000.
Project Period
The period of performance begins as soon as contracts are executed and ends three years from the
date of execution.
Eligibility Criteria
This program is open to applicants who meet the basic requirements and can work in Washington. Some projects have additional eligibility requirements based on their category. Eligible entities include:
- Electric grid operators
- Electricity storage operators
- Electricity generators
- Transmission owners or operators
- Distribution providers
- Fuel suppliers
- Other applicants approved by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
