Details:

This third year of the Governor’s Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative (MOLI) will provide funding for programs that provide opportunities for grades 6-12 students at no cost to students and families (including transportation to and from program site(s)). Programming must provide students with opportunities to engage in authentic, accelerated, interdisciplinary experiences in Maine and be held outside as much as practical. The accelerated outdoor learning can take place before, during, or after school; on weekends; during school breaks and/or over the summer. Incorporating innovative design processes, leadership opportunities, and career development are strongly encouraged while addressing the impact of lost instructional time and reengaging students.

Funding Information

The Department has a total of $2 million of American Rescue Plan (ARP) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding available for this RFA, allocated to the categories defined in the below.

  • $25,000 to $74,999: Up to $500,001
  • $75,000 to $249,999: Up to $500,000
  • $250,000 to $999,999: Up to $999,999

Allowable Uses

Funding must be used for programs that are:

  • Available at no cost to students and families, including transportation to and from program site(s);
  • For students in grades 6-12;
  • Held outside as much as practical; and
  • Incorporate meaningful educational experiences.

Funding should be used to:

  • Increase participation of students from disadvantaged circumstances who have or have had infrequent opportunities to access outdoor educational experiences due to geographic, financial or other barriers; and
  • Address the impact of lost instructional time and reengaging students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, the Applicant is required to be one of the following:

  • A Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center
  • A municipal Parks and Recreational Department that:
    • provides resources and services for the purposes of leisure, entertainment, and recreational pursuits, and
    • is a current member of the Maine Recreation and Park Association
  • A school providing Education in the Unorganized Territory (EUT)
  • A private or nonprofit organization that incorporates outdoor educational experiences for youth;
  • A private school approved for tuition purpose and located in Maine
  • A public charter school
  • A public library Free public libraries established in towns
  • A School Administrative Unit (SAU)
