The Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) funds projects that support biodiversity research on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts and the surrounding offshore waters.
Donor Name: Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI)
State: Massachusetts
City: Nantucket
Type of Grant: Grant
Deadline: 02/13/2026
Size of the Grant: $1000 to $10,000
Grant Duration: 1 Year
Details:
In 2026, NBI will provide support for General Biodiversity Research and Climate Change Impact Research as it relates to Biodiversity projects that expand knowledge of understudied taxonomic groups and the overall biodiversity of Nantucket, Tuckernuck and/or Muskeget Islands.
The mission of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) is to support and convey a deeper understanding of the biodiversity of Nantucket, Tuckernuck, Muskeget, and their associated waters by fostering collaboration, funding and facilitating research, and sharing scientific knowledge.
- Partnerships
- NBI facilitates partnerships with conservation and research organizations, educational institutions, government agencies, local businesses, and individuals.
- Expansion of Biodiversity Knowledge
- NBI provides consistent, local funding for biodiversity research projects and prioritizes projects that involve rare species, multispecies analyses, and larger scale regional efforts. They support research that documents island species through population monitoring, recording range shifts and incorporating climate change data. They coordinate the deposition and management of data, reports, and biological specimens at appropriate institutions.
- Biodiversity Knowledge Transfer
- NBI creates opportunities for the public to learn about Nantucket’s unique species and diverse ecosystems, provides equitable access to biodiversity information to all, and coordinates scientific communication between researchers and the public. NBI serves as a biodiversity resource and advising authority.
- Support Community Science and Stewardship
- NBI detects non-native invasive species and prioritizes their management based on the threat they pose to biodiversity. They assess aquatic threats, catalogue trends, and increase awareness of their impact.
Highest priority will be given to:
- Projects that forward the mission of NBI;
- Projects that include Nantucket, Tuckernuck and/or Muskeget regionally, nationally or globally;
- Research on climate change impacts to biodiversity or biodiversity-related resiliency projects;
- Research or inventory work on understudied taxonomic groups;
- Research on more than one species of interest;
- Novel and interesting research not previously conducted on Nantucket
Funding Information
Grants may be awarded up to $3500 for ONE Year. Successful grants are typically between $1000 – $3000 and partial support may be awarded as the grant committee deems appropriate.
