The HumanitiesDC is seeking applications for its DC Oral History Collaborative Beyond the Archives Grant Program.

Donor Name: HumanitiesDC

State: District of Columbia

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 02/20/2024

Size of the Grant: $10,000 to $100,000

Grant Duration: 1 Year

Details:

The DC Oral History Collaborative (DCOHC) documents, preserves, and celebrates the lived experiences of all Washington, DC residents and communities through oral history. The Collaborative accomplishes this by providing training, mentorship, resources, programs, and funding to current and aspiring oral historians.

This grant funds individuals, community groups, and nonprofits who propose projects that bring existing oral history interviews about Washington, DC’s life, history and culture out of libraries, archives, and personal collections into the public view.

This grant funds proposals that:

  • Clearly indicate which existing oral history interviews will be used to create the public project, where they can be found, and how they will be accessed
  • Do not propose creating a new oral history project for use in an interpretive work
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the subject matter to be explored and the expected primary audience for the project
  • Describe, in detail, how audiences or users will engage with the proposed public project or event
  • List an advisor or team member who is knowledgeable about the proposed subject matter

Projects must include:

  • A Specific Connection to Washington, DC
    • Projects should connect to DC society, culture, history, and/or residents. Although projects may be connected to national issues, the primary scope and audience is focused on DC.
  • A Humanities Focus
    • Projects must incorporate relevant humanities scholarship with specific focus on one or more central humanities disciplines. Topics should be innovative, unique, and/or of strong interest to a wide audience.
  • Strong Scholar or Expert Involvement
    • Each project will include a humanitiesbased scholar, historian or expert as an advisor or partner who is knowledgeable about the relevant field or subject matter and dedicated to helping guide the project to completion. The scholar should have formal training and/or lived experience in the topic.
  • Community Partnership
    • All proposed grant projects should demonstrate both how the targeted community will benefit from the project and be actively involved in its creation. Projects must be inclusive, equitable, and publicly accessible.
