It awards small grants for entities to convene community-building events and activities that increase social engagement and connection for veterans, military servicemembers, and their respective families. The intent is to cultivate a sense of belonging among veterans and that help bridge the military-civilian divide. This program strives to reduce veterans’ feelings of isolation by providing socialization opportunities for them and their families, to help address the inequities they may face while creatively building community.

Eligible Projects
Eligible proposed projects must:
- Include a clear plan for providing social engagement via a short-term, time-limited project to build social connection among veterans, military servicemembers, or military family members in King County:
- Veteran: A person who has served as either an active duty or a reservist member in any of the armed forces recognized by the United States Department of Defense.
- Veteran Family: A family unit consisting of one or more cohabitating adults over the age of 18 in combination with other adults or children, regardless of relationship. Those who are away from home due to family instability or placement in foster care are considered family members. A family unit includes sheltered or unsheltered non-cohabitating veterans or veteran family members who have cohabitated within the past year and have relied on each other for mutual support and stability.
- Have a focus on serving adults (age 18+). Other family and community, including youth, may be included if adults are the focus population served.
- Be for new, not currently offered, or substantially different projects or programs.
- Conclude by December of the award year or earlier.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a not-for-profit organization, community-based organization, for-profit company, tribe or tribal organization, or public or governmental agency with at least one physical location in King County.
- Acknowledge a commitment to incorporate a racial and equity lens when administering and delivering services.
- Not have an existing contract with King County DCHS – Adult Services Division for this project.
- Not have already received a Vets Engaged award in the same calendar year as the proposed project would take place.
Evaluation Criteria
- Proposal Description and Scope: Applicant presents a compelling proposal for a short-term, time-limited project focused on social engagement and community-building; clearly describes strategies for engaging community members; and demonstrates clear understanding of, and authentic commitment to, serving these populations. Project timeline is realistic and abides by funding parameters.
- Experience and Ability: Applicant demonstrates relevant experience in conducting proposed activities and serving priority populations.
- Equity, Racial & Social Justice: Applicant demonstrates deep understanding of equity, racial and social justice (ERSJ) and the ability to provide culturally relevant activities, as well as commitment to ERSJ through proposal design.
- Budget & Fiscal: Budget is complete, accounts for full application amount, and aligns with proposed activities.
- Evaluation & Documentation: Applicant describes how to measure success for their proposed activities, and explains how it will document proposed activities and participant feedback.
