The goal of SADD in Anne Arundel County is to:
- Create, equip and sustain a network of student-run chapters focused on peer-to-peer education and community building.
- Foster a sense of belonging and community among youth, regardless of culture, creed or credentials.
- Promote resilience, leadership and advocacy skills so that young people make positive life decisions.
The SADD peer-to-peer education strategy aims to use youth peers to train and influence their friends on the adoption of healthy behaviors. This strategy will target the most vulnerable youth, who will be trained by peers who have similar life experiences, with the goal of reducing health disparities among county youth.
The successful applicant will be an Anne Arundel County Public School club or Youth Serving Organization based in the county and has the capacity to provide peer-to-peer education on substance use prevention. Priority will be given to organizations that have an active SADD chapter.
Funding Information
Grants will be awarded in the amount of $2,000.
Applicant Eligibility
- Be an Anne Arundel County public middle or high school club or a Youth Serving Organization.
- Active SADD Chapters will receive an extra 10 points on the scoring rubric.
- Current and previous grant recipients of AACDOH must be in good standing with the AACDOH, having demonstrated compliance with the conditions of past grants and satisfactory performance.
Applicants must also provide:
- Proof of Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation Good Standing, if applicable
- Proof of Good Standing Maryland Charities Database/compliance with Maryland Solicitations Act, if applicable
- Organization’s most recent W-9
- A letter from the school principal or organizational leadership to document the existence of SADD Chapter, if applicable. See a sample letter in the application packet.
Required Activities
This funding aims to support the education of middle- and high-school-aged youth by increasing knowledge and awareness of the dangers of substance use to the development of brain and mental health and promoting resiliency among the youth of Anne Arundel County. Required activities include:
- Having six youths trained to conduct the train-the-trainer presentation and take a pre- and post-test.
- Conducting a peer-to-peer training session or sessions to 60 youth peers and administering a pre- and post-test.
- Ensuring the length of each presentation to peers is at a minimum of 25 minutes.
- Adapting training materials to be in the youth voice such as adding visuals, changing language, and using creative formats such as a video, PowerPoint Presentation or skit. To include the following content:
- Opioids, vaping, alcohol and one other substance of their choice
- One resilience skill listed in the training
- Mental health signs and symptoms
- Explains the connection between mental health and substance use
- Lists at least five community resources.
