Applicants must propose place-based projects to design, produce, and install creative streetscape improvement projects on commercial corridors. Proposals should respond to local conditions and opportunities related to lighting, public art, or wayfinding. Applicants are also encouraged to propose projects that incorporate elements related to district marketing, design innovation, or other quality of life improvements. Projects must be implemented on commercial corridors where there is substantial storefront business activity. Building off of the Making New York Work for Everyone Action Plan, this program recognizes that public space programming, art, and tactical transformations can play a pivotal role in enlivening neighborhoods and fostering commercial revitalization.
Program Categories
The Public Realm Grant is focused on improving streetscape conditions and quality of life on commercial corridors through tactical installations in public spaces. Applicants may propose place-based projects that fall within the following categories:
- Commercial District Lighting – Proposals that are focused on improving lighting conditions on commercial corridors through creative lighting projects. Projects need to respond to local challenges and opportunities related to streetscape lighting and must broaden the appeal and enhance the quality of life of commercial districts. Proposals should respond to local conditions and opportunities related to lighting, such as concerns of insufficient outdoor lighting at night, poor perceptions of safety, an absence of placemaking activities, and other objectives related to business support and commercial revitalization. Funding may be used for activities or improvements related to implementing lighting projects on commercial corridors. For projects on or over the public right-of-way, please see supplemental guidance below from NYC DOT on additional considerations that may affect proposed projects. Proposals may request funding of up to $100,000.
- Commercial Canvas – The Commercial Canvas initiative aims to celebrate the unique culture and character of New York City’s neighborhoods through the production of public murals. By targeting commercial corridors for mural placement, this category of work intends to enhance neighborhood vitality, prevent vandalism and graffiti, and foster cooperation among merchants and residents. While other programs have successfully merged the practices of mural-making and community development, this program will focus on the unique benefits that murals can bring to commercial districts: along with decreasing vandalism, public art has the potential to increase commercial corridor foot traffic and revenue for local businesses. Murals also attract publicity, which in turn boosts the commercial district’s marketing and visibility. Furthermore, the facilitation of a mural design/community visioning process can strengthen connections between residents, merchants, and local institutions. Together, these stakeholders will improve the physical environment of the commercial corridor through artwork on building facades or infrastructure such as walls, plazas, construction fencing, storefront gates, or other locations, while contributing to a sense of collective stewardship. Proposals may request funding of up to $50,000.
- Neighborhood Navigator – The Neighborhood Navigator initiative will fund projects that guide visitors and shoppers toward local neighborhood destinations. By developing and installing creative wayfinding tools that celebrate the unique identities of neighborhoods, this program aims to highlight commercial corridors, historic landmarks, and local destinations that are otherwise omitted from traditional wayfinding signage. This work can also tackle navigation challenges posed by physical barriers such as highways, wide boulevards, or major construction projects, and enable pedestrians to discover the full charm of commercial districts which in turn can boost revenue for local businesses. Wayfinding materials may be a combination of physical elements, such as painted walking paths or signage, and virtual components, such as QR codes or virtual reality experiences. Proposals may request funding of up to $50,000.
