The New York Bar Foundation is the charitable and philanthropic entity of the New York State Bar Association. They receive charitable contributions from individuals, law firms, corporations and other entities, and provide grants to further the primary goals:
- Advancing service to the public
- Improving the administration of justice
- Supporting legal research and education
- Upholding high standards of professional ethics
- Increasing public understanding of legal heritage.
In 2026, the Foundation will focus its grantmaking on programs that help low-income individuals with the essentials of life, including housing stability and homelessness prevention, access to quality education, family and domestic safety, support for small businesses and economic sufficiency, and legal advocacy for veterans.
Length of TNYBF funding – Foundation funding for meritorious programs could be awarded for as long as three years for the same program. The three-year limitation will not necessarily apply to New York State Bar Association projects and programs.
Geographic Distribution
The Foundation should strive for geographic diversity in awarding grants for legal services provided in New York State.
Limitations
An organization will be limited to submitting only one grant proposal per twelve (12) month period, except under extraordinary circumstances. The limitation does not apply to New York State Bar Association projects and programs.
