The Texas Library Association (TLA) offers grants through its Disaster Relief Fund to libraries affected by natural disasters. These grants range from $1,500 to $5,000 and can be used for technology, facility repair, collections, furnishings, or other needs related to storm damage. Academic, public, school, and special libraries in Texas are eligible for assistance. The funds are designed to help these libraries recover and continue providing services to their communities after a disaster.
In addition to the TLA grants, the Heritage Emergency National Task Force (HENTF), a partnership between FEMA and the Smithsonian Institution, provides support to cultural institutions and arts organizations impacted by disasters. They offer advice, guidance, and access to trained conservators through the National Heritage Responders hotline. The Task Force also provides resources for salvaging damaged family heirlooms and collections.
To apply for the grants, libraries must submit an application that includes details on the extent of damage, how the funds will be used, and the impact on library services. The Disaster Relief Committee evaluates each application based on these criteria, as well as the availability of other public or private funding for recovery. Libraries receiving the grants may also be asked to share their stories and images for publicity purposes.
