The purpose of the Williams County Tourism Grant Program is to promote, encourage, and attract visitors to, and use the travel and tourism facilities in, Williams County. A total of $100,000 is available for the 2026 Grant Program, with eligible expenses including capital projects, event support, and advertising initiatives.
Applications that can clearly and directly demonstrate that they contribute to expanding tourism experiences or generating overnight stays in Williams County will be prioritized. Applications for any element of the program must be related to a facility or event located outside of the city limits of the City of Williston, but within Williams County.
Eligible Expenses
All expenses for which grant funds are being requested must be related to tourism. Expenses may be incurred over a multi-year period, but the timeline of expenditure must be clearly stated in the application.
Any category of expense not specifically listed below may still be eligible for a grant award, but the proposed expense must be for tourism purposes and the decision to include the expense will be at the discretion of the Williams County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). In addition, whether a particular expense falls within the requirements below or otherwise will be at the sole discretion of Williams County.
Capital Projects (request not to exceed $20,000)
- Purchase, installation, and/or improvement of equipment, signage, infrastructure, or a facility located outside the city limits of the City of Williston, but within Williams County, that relates to tourism, including drawing visitors to, or serving visitors in, Williams County.
- Capital projects that focus on destination development will be prioritized over maintenance projects.
Events & Advertising Initiatives (request not to exceed $5,000)
- Advertising expenses (e.g. social media, print, radio) for an event to be held, or facility located, outside the city limits of the City of Williston, but within Williams County.
- Expenses related to attracting or hosting an event to be located outside the city limits of the City of Williston, but within Williams County.
- Marketing strategies and technologies, such as websites, signage, or other means of advertising tourism-related events to be held, or facilities located, outside the city limits of the City of Williston, but within Williams County.
Eligibility Criteria
One Tourism Grant Program application will be accepted per entity. To apply for any element of the program, the project must be located, or the event must be taking place, outside of the city limits of the City of Williston, but within Williams County.
Eligible Applicants
- Private non-profit corporations, companies, clubs, organizations, and associations
- Private for-profit corporations, companies, clubs, organizations, and associations
- Political subdivisions of the state of North Dakota or other public or governmental entities.
- Fiscal agents must be used if applicant is not one of the three types of groups listed above. The fiscal agent must be identified in the application at the time of submission.
- If applicant is a property owner in Williams County, applicant must be current on real property taxes for all property owned in Williams County and must be in compliance with applicable Williams County or applicable city zoning ordinances and subdivision regulations, and amendments thereto, for all property owned by applicant in Williams County.
- Applicants that have been previously awarded a Williams County Tourism Grant are eligible to re-apply in 2026, but will be given a lower priority than new applicants.
- Applicant must be able to enter into written agreement with Williams County, subject to terms and conditions acceptable to Williams County, to be granted and receive reimbursement of funds under this program.
