The program is designed to find a healthy balance between suburban/exurban development, open space preservation, and natural resource conservation including surface water and groundwater quality protection.
The program relies on non-profits or local units of government that buy land or easements to set aside for permanent conservation on productive farmland or open space within Washington County.
The Conservation & Heritage Grant Program has four multi-faceted goals:
- Conserve open space, productive farmland, and rural heritage,
- Conserve flood storage areas,
- Protect surface water quality, and
- Protect groundwater.
Eligibility Criteria
- Qualified Applicants:
- Non-profits 501(c)(3), tribal entities, and local units of government with a tax-exempt status are eligible to apply for funding. Private landowners may not directly apply; however, they may work with a non-profit or other organization to apply. Applicants that apply should be equipped to handle easements or purchasing land and show evidence that they already have experienced staff, lawyers, real estate agents, and a process in place. Applicants’ historic performance in managing easements or land purchased and closing efficiency will be considered. This program was designed as an application and selection process only. Applicants will provide at a minimum their W-9 and registered agent.
