The Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers Wild & Scenic Committee is delighted to provide funding for projects, activities and infrastructure in the communities that the Wild and Scenic rivers flow through.
The Wild and Scenic River Community Grants and Municipal Grants are offered every year as part of the Wild & Scenic Committee annual budget. They are thrilled to support many community partners in protecting and enhancing the quality and enjoyment of the Upper Missisquoi and Trout Wild and Scenic Rivers and their outstanding resources.
- Wild and Scenic River Community Grants:
- The Wild & Scenic River Community grants are intended to advance or support projects that protect and enhance the quality and enjoyment of the Upper Missisquoi and Trout Wild and Scenic Rivers and their outstanding resources.
- Municipal Grants
- Grant will be made to municipalities for roadway and infrastructure improvements that will benefit the rivers as well as the communities they flow through. Successful projects will address the protection and enhancement of the Upper Missisquoi and Trout Wild and Scenic Rivers and their outstanding resources, with a specific emphasis on water quality.
- They understand that towns have many demands on limited resources to maintain infrastructure. It is the hope that UMATR Municipal Grant funding will enable municipalities to use best management practices guided by sound river science to improve water quality or natural resource protections along the Wild and Scenic sections of the rivers or tributaries within their jurisdiction.
Wild and Scenic River Community Grants Eligible Projects
Projects that enhance or protect the rivers and the outstanding resources (water quality, natural resources scenic and recreational, and historic and cultural), and/or that increase awareness, appropriate use, and appreciation of these resource values are eligible. Possible project ideas include but are not limited to the following:
- Conservation, restoration, or enhancement of fish, wildlife, water quality, historic, or recreational resources
- Public education about the river and its resources and values
- Studies contributing to increased understanding and better management of river resources
- Promotion of recreation encouraging people to use and protect the rivers
- Protection of land or enhancement of soil health along the rivers and their tributaries
- Art projects which engage the public and promote the rivers and their outstanding resources
- Water conservation education and implementation
- Efforts to plan and manage for climate resiliency
- Protection of natural river flow regimes
- Projects engaging youth in the arts and sciences of river resources and encouraging an awareness and appreciation of river resources.

- Grant awards of up to $10,000.
Eligibility Criteria
- Wild and Scenic River Community Grants
- Eligible entities include, but are not limited to, planning boards, water/wastewater departments, conservation commissions, libraries, recreation departments, schools (including environmental clubs, art programs, science classes, etc.), and other town-sanctioned committees and boards. Community-based organizations, such as historical societies, garden clubs, art associations, churches, local land trusts, and neighborhood groups, are also eligible. Individuals interested in applying should partner with either a town or nonprofit organization.
- Municipal Grants
- Eligible municipalities include Westfield, Troy, North Troy, Richford, Berkshire, Enosburgh, Enosburg Falls, and Montgomery.

- Latitude and Longitude coordinates of project location
- Project Map
- Project Type and description as appropriate (fill out appropriate section based on Project Type selected)
- Project Budget (10% match required)
- Project Timeline
- Recommended information: Applications that provide Before Photos of the project site will receive extra points during review (Before and After photos will be required for all projects as part of the final report, but Before photos may be submitted in advance)
- Fifty percent of the award amount will be provided up front; the remainder will be received after the project has been completed and a final report has been submitted.
- Applicants will be notified of results of the selection process by early December 2024.
- Decisions to fund a project will be based on how well the project meets the Review Criteria and on available funds. The UMATR Committee reserves the right to offer partial funding, or to reject all proposals.
