Working Students Pilot Grant for Nonprofits

Total Wireless, a phone service provider covered by the Verizon 5G network, is partnering with Empower Work, a national nonprofit on a mission to build healthier, more equitable workplaces, to launch a new program designed to support working students.

Details:

The grant will be used to support nonprofits’ missions serving working students and will require 2 – 4 in-person Total Wireless store events in 2025. Grantees will have the opportunity to work closely with the Empower Work team and leverage their suite of resources to support their local community.

Empower Work will be selecting nonprofits in Dallas, Detroit, and Chicago to receive grants between $50,000 – $150,000. Selected nonprofits will use those grant dollars to:

  • Fund existing programs that support working students, including job training, skill development, job placement, career advancement, and subsidies. Working students may include, but are not limited to: high schoolers balancing work and jobs, parents returning to school and raising families, college students pursuing degrees while working, workers pursuing additional training and skills.
  • Plan and host 2-4 in-person events for working students at a predetermined, independently-operated Total Wireless retail location (1-2 locations per city). Sample events may include resume writing workshops, job fairs, coaching, or other events that help working students thrive.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • 501c3 non-profit
  • Serving working students in Chicago, Dallas, or Detroit.
  • Generally provide working students with job training, skill development, job placement, career advancement, subsidies, and/or other support
  • Can commit to a 1-year partnership with a designated point of contact
  • Can commit to planning, attending, recruiting for, and hosting 2-4 in-store events in 2025
  • Have a culture of learning and sharing
  • Are excited about leveraging local retail stores as a community event space to further your mission.
