The HIV epidemic remains a disproportionate burden in the US South. A disruption of federal resources to communities most impacted by HIV and the oppressive structural context of Texas underscores the need to carry language justice at the forefront of social work micro, mezo, and macro practice. This training highlights a unique opportunity for a new generation of social work language justice practitioners (regardless of their time in practice as a social worker) to raise awareness, bridge gaps, and create meaningful change, ensuring that we can all communicate, understand, and be understood in the languages they prefer. Together, they will honor histories and cultures and minimize racist trauma and harm to those who use non-dominant languages.
This training and coaching opportunity is designed to provide knowledge, skills, reflection, and workshopping to support social workers in learning and applying language justice in their practice, with a focus on culture. Upon completion, participants will be able to apply the language justice framework when communicating with others (e.g., clients, staff, leadership, community members, etc.). In addition, participants will apply 1-2 components of the language justice framework to plan for activities that social workers engage with (e.g., biopsychosocial assessments, case notes, treatment plans, program design, advocacy projects). This training also aims to provide an opportunity for networking among social workers who are interested in promoting better language justice practices. Applicants must work with people living with or communities most systematically impacted by HIV (e.g., historically minoritized communities) in the Greater Houston-Galveston Area.
Participants will:
- Learn the history of Language Justice
- Understand a Language Justice framework with a focus on culture
- Apply 1-2 components of the expanded framework to plan for activities that social workers engage with (e.g., biopsychosocial assessments, case notes, treatment plans, program design, advocacy projects)
- Participants will engage in individual reflection, group discussions, and other hands-on learning methods to learn how to utilize language justice approaches or practices rooted in liberation, anti-oppression, relationship-building, decision-making, and communication in their daily work
