Lake Placid Education Foundation for Non-profit Organizations (New York)

Dated: December 14, 2021

The Lake Placid Education Foundation makes grants to qualified organizations on an annual basis. Although grants can be made elsewhere, primary support goes to applicants in the Adirondack region area of New York State. Except in very special circumstances, grants are not awarded to organizations for land acquisition, capital campaigns, or endowment purposes. Additionally, grants are not made to individuals.

State: New York

Town: Adirondack

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 06/01/2022

Size of the Grant: 500 to $50,000

Details:

Melvil Dewey founded the Lake Placid Club, Northwood School, Forest Press, and the Lake Placid Education Foundation (LPEF). Mr. Dewey is best known for his invention of the Dewey Decimal Classification, which is a system used throughout the world for the organization and classification of knowledge in libraries. The sale of the copyright for the Dewey Decimal System provided the funds for the LPEF, which today supports libraries, schools, arts organizations, and other nonprofits throughout the Adirondacks. Adirondack Foundation and LPEF acknowledge and reject the antisemitic and racist views of Melvil Dewey, which are well documented through his own writings and in historical records.
