Turning Grief Into Action: Woman Launches Nonprofit in Memory of Her Mother

Dated: October 23, 2024

In a heartfelt response to personal tragedy, Lindsie Grass has established a nonprofit organization named Focused Halos, dedicated to supporting individuals who have experienced similar losses. This initiative honors her mother, Darlene Grass, who was tragically killed two years ago in Englewood, Colorado.

Key Takeaways

  • Lindsie Grass founded Focused Halos to help others cope with loss.
  • The nonprofit offers self-care packages and photography sessions.
  • Grass aims to create a supportive community for those grieving.

A Life Changed Forever

In late September 2022, Lindsie Grass’s life was irrevocably altered when her mother, 68-year-old Darlene Grass, was shot and killed on her doorstep. The incident occurred during a chaotic moment when a man, armed and wearing a tactical vest, ran through the neighborhood.

Lindsie recalls the harrowing experience of arriving at her mother’s home, overwhelmed by the sight of flashing police lights and crime scene tape. The loss of her mother, who was not only her parent but also her best friend, left a profound impact on her life.

Finding Strength in Adversity

After the killer was sentenced earlier this year, Lindsie made a conscious decision to reclaim her life. "That was kind of my moment to take my power back," she stated, emphasizing her determination to not let the tragedy define her.

This newfound strength inspired her to create Focused Halos, a nonprofit aimed at helping others navigate the difficult journey of grief.

Focused Halos: A Mission to Help

Focused Halos is designed to provide emotional and practical support to those dealing with loss. The organization offers:

  • Photography Sessions: Lindsie, an avid photographer, provides photo sessions in exchange for donations. This initiative helps families capture precious memories, especially for those who may not have many photos of their loved ones.
  • Self-Care Packages: Recognizing the challenges of daily life after a loss, Lindsie has curated self-care packages that include essential items such as:
    • Lotion
    • Shampoo and conditioner
    • Soap and washcloths
    • A journal and pen for personal reflection

These packages aim to ease the burden of daily tasks and provide a means for individuals to express their feelings.

A Legacy of Love

Lindsie believes that giving back is a way to honor her mother’s memory. "She always told me that I was going to make a change in this world. I just never knew that it would be at this capacity," Lindsie reflected.

The name Focused Halos was chosen with intention, symbolizing both the focus of a camera lens and the halo representing her mother’s spirit. Lindsie is actively collaborating with various agencies across Colorado to distribute care packages to those in need.

How to Get Involved

Focused Halos welcomes donations to support its mission. Contributions can be made through photography sessions or via an Amazon Wishlist, allowing individuals to help without participating in a photoshoot.

Through her nonprofit, Lindsie Grass is not only honoring her mother’s legacy but also creating a community of support for those grappling with loss, ensuring that no one has to face their grief alone.
