New Nonprofit Partnership Provides Essential Food Support for Those Transitioning Out of Homelessness

Dated: November 16, 2024

A new partnership between nonprofits Together We Achieve and Central Furniture Rescue is making significant strides in supporting individuals transitioning out of homelessness by providing essential food resources. This initiative aims to ensure that those moving into new homes have access to nutritious meals, addressing a critical gap in support services.

Key Takeaways

  • Partnership Formation: Together We Achieve and Central Furniture Rescue have joined forces to provide food assistance to individuals moving out of homelessness.
  • Emergency Fundraising Success: Together We Achieve successfully raised $50,000 in a week to sustain its operations.
  • Immediate Impact: The partnership has already delivered 50 boxes of food, bringing joy and relief to many families.
  • Increased Demand: Both organizations report a rising need for their services, highlighting the importance of collaboration.

The Need for Support

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the challenges faced by individuals transitioning out of homelessness are profound. Many people find themselves in new homes but without the means to stock their kitchens. Susan Johnston, founder of Central Furniture Rescue, emphasizes that after helping families move in, they often discover empty pantries.

"They hadn’t eaten all day. They might not have eaten for a couple of days. Because they’ve just spent money getting into that apartment," Johnston explained.

This stark reality underscores the necessity for food assistance as part of the transition process.

A Collaborative Solution

The partnership between Together We Achieve and Central Furniture Rescue was born out of a shared mission to better serve the community. Earlier this month, Together We Achieve sent 50 boxes of food to Central Furniture Rescue, marking a significant step in addressing the immediate needs of families moving into new homes.

Johnston shared the emotional impact of this initiative, stating, "Tears… there are tears happening because they can make a meal they start opening that box and they’re so excited."

Growing Demand for Services

Both nonprofits are witnessing an increase in demand for their services. Together We Achieve founder Raymond Siddell noted, "We’re all seeing the same thing which is an increase in need, new household or new neighbors that we’re serving. And so these collaborations and partnerships allow us to better serve, more effectively serve."

Central Furniture Rescue currently assists around 70 households each month, with nearly half of those households including children. Many of these families lack transportation, making it even more challenging to access food after moving into a new place.

Conclusion

The partnership between Together We Achieve and Central Furniture Rescue is a vital step in addressing the food insecurity faced by individuals transitioning out of homelessness. By providing essential food resources, these organizations are not only helping families settle into their new homes but also fostering a sense of community and support. As the demand for such services continues to grow, collaborations like this will be crucial in ensuring that no one goes hungry during their transition to stability.
