The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) seeks to support research and evaluation that advances the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the criminal justice system.

Donor Name: National Institute of Justice (NIJ)

State: All States

County: All Counties

Territory: Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 03/04/2025

Size of the Grant: More than $1 million

Grant Duration: 5 Years

Details:

This funding opportunity aims to support innovative research and evaluation into the use of AI within the criminal justice system, especially at the state and local levels. The program seeks to improve the fairness, accuracy, and effectiveness of criminal justice processes through AI applications in crime prevention, public safety, and decision-making. NIJ expects to fund studies that explore specific use cases in policing, corrections, courts, or other criminal justice adjacent areas, such as juvenile justice, crime victim services, and community-based organizations. These studies may examine the implementation of AI as well as the evaluation of its impacts and outcomes when integrated into criminal justice practices. Research and evaluation methods that can (1) verify that the AI is operating as intended and (2) validate how the AI is impacting performance in the context of the criminal justice practice under study are a priority.

The goal is to improve the fairness, accuracy, and effectiveness of criminal justice processes through AI applications in crime prevention, public safety, and justice system decision-making. Research should explore both the benefits and limitations of AI, addressing potential risks and downstream impacts.
