Local Nonprofits Receive Significant Grants to Boost Community Initiatives

Dated: January 18, 2025

In a significant boost for local communities, several nonprofits across the United States have been awarded substantial grants aimed at enhancing their services and outreach. These grants, totaling over $1 million, will support various initiatives, including economic development, housing assistance, and healthcare services.

Key Takeaways

  • Total Funding: Over $1 million awarded to local nonprofits.
  • Focus Areas: Economic development, housing, healthcare, and community support.
  • Participating Regions: Long Island, Lane County, and Evansville.

Long Island Nonprofits Awarded $500,000

Bank of America has awarded $500,000 to two nonprofits in Long Island: United Veterans Beacon House and the Long Island Children’s Museum. Each organization will receive $200,000 over two years, along with leadership training and access to a national network of nonprofit peers. Additionally, United Veterans Beacon House will receive a separate $100,000 grant to launch its Unmet Needs Program, aimed at expanding services for veterans.

Frank Amalfitano, president and CEO of United Veterans Beacon House, expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the importance of the funding in enhancing their outreach and technology.

Lane County Grants Totaling $200,000

In Lane County, eight nonprofits have been awarded a total of $200,000 in economic development grants. The funding will assist organizations in attracting business investments, supporting small businesses, and providing workforce training. Each nonprofit will receive between $5,000 and $30,000.

Notable recipients include:

  • Everyone Village: $29,750 to develop a modular medical clinic.
  • Daisy Chain: $27,000 for workforce development in reproductive healthcare.
  • Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad: $29,500 to support Latinx immigrant entrepreneurs.

Gabe Piechowicz, founder of Everyone Village, highlighted the transformative impact of the grant on their community services.

Evansville’s Forward Together Grants

Evansville has launched the Forward Together grant program, distributing $500,000 to 18 local nonprofits. This initiative, funded by interest from American Rescue Plan Act funds, aims to strengthen neighborhoods and provide pathways out of poverty. Each organization could apply for up to $35,000.

The selected nonprofits include:

  • Ark Crisis Children’s Center: $35,000 for childcare services during family crises.
  • Aurora Housing Our Homeless: $35,000 for street outreach services.
  • Building Blocks: $35,000 to improve kindergarten readiness for Haitian families.

Mayor Stephanie Terry expressed hope for the continuation of this program, emphasizing the need for ongoing support for local organizations.

Conclusion

The recent grants awarded to nonprofits across various regions reflect a growing commitment to community support and development. By providing essential funding, these initiatives aim to enhance services, support vulnerable populations, and foster economic growth in their respective areas. The collaborative efforts of local governments and organizations are crucial in addressing the diverse needs of communities and ensuring a brighter future for all.
