Maine Arts Commission’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program

The Traditional Arts Apprenticeship helps communities sustain their cultural heritage by providing an opportunity for master traditional artists to pass on their skills to a qualified apprentice or apprentices.

Details:

Based on experience and commitment to their art form, master artists select an apprentice to teach for an extended period of time, one on one, usually for a year. Up to $3,000 is available for the master artists’ teaching fees, supplies and travel costs. Preference is given to selecting apprentices who are members of the same ethnic, religious, occupational, tribal or familial group as the master artist.

Grant awards may be used for fees for the master teacher, supplies and/or equipment, travel expenses (for master or apprentice), books and educational materials. If you have participated in the Apprenticeship Program for three consecutive years, you must take a year off before reapplying.

Grants amount awarded $3,000.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must have an active Maine Arts Commission account and current Vendor Code to receive funding. Applicants are eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Master and apprentice have both resided full-time in Maine for at least one year immediately prior to the application deadline.
  • Master and apprentice will both reside full-time in Maine throughout the apprenticeship.
  • Master artist is recognized by their community for expertise in a particular traditional art form.
  • Apprentice demonstrates competency in the art form prior to the apprenticeship.
  • Master is at least 18 years of age or older by the application deadline.
  • Master is not a student enrolled in a degree or certificate-granting program.
  • Master is in compliance with final reports required for previous Maine Arts Commission awards.

Ineligible Expenses:

Grant awards may not be used to fund lodging and food costs. Grant awards may not be re-granted nor used to cover the costs of brick-and-mortar projects, non-project related travel or fundraising for the project.

Review Criteria

Grant applications are reviewed on a competitive basis using the following criteria:

  • Artistic strength of master according to the standards of the traditional community. (20%)
  • Role of the artist and art form in community life and significance of tradition. (20%)
  • Skill and commitment of the apprentice. (20%)
  • Feasibility of work plan and likelihood of a successful collaboration between master and apprentice. (20%)
  • Potential impact of apprenticeship on continued vitality of the traditional art. (20%)
