CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Prevention (WP) Grants Program provides funding for projects that reduce the risk of wildfires in and around California communities. The goal is to increase protection for people, property, and infrastructure while also promoting public health and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The program supports three main categories of wildfire prevention: Hazardous Fuels Reduction, Wildfire Prevention Planning, and Wildfire Prevention Education. Funded activities include vegetation clearance, creating or maintaining fuel breaks, thinning trees, defensible space compliance, and community chipping or green waste programs. Other projects may involve prescribed grazing or enhancing access routes for emergency personnel.
Planning projects may include wildfire risk mapping, updates to evacuation or mitigation plans, and the creation of local wildfire protection or hazard mitigation strategies. Educational initiatives can include public workshops, materials, outreach campaigns, and trainings to build wildfire awareness and promote fire-resilient communities.
Grants may be awarded up to $950,000 per project, with equipment purchases capped at $750,000 total. Projects are evaluated based on their potential to reduce wildfire threats and their alignment with California’s Strategic Fire Plan.
Eligible applicants include state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, Joint Powers Authorities, and a range of local agencies like cities, counties, fire protection districts, and certified local conservation corps. Nonprofits and Fire Safe Councils with 501(c)(3) status may also apply. The application deadline is August 6, 2025.
