Request for Proposals: Outdoor Art Piece – Celebrating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (Washington)

Dated: June 7, 2022

The Sammamish Arts Commission in cooperation with the Sammamish City Council is seeking artists, who will design and create an art piece for one of Sammamish Community Parks.

Donor Name: City of Sammamish

State: Washington

City: Sammamish

Type of Grant:  Grant

Type of Entity: Artists

Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 06/28/2022

Size of the Grant: $50,000

Details:

The Commission is approaching the theme “Celebrating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” where Diversity means a mix of different identities and cultures, Equity to acknowledge that we do not always start on a level playing field, and Inclusion to acknowledge individual voices and power. “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” is a priority to the city.

Artists will have full design control during the Request for Proposals based on their artistic and professional experience in creating the installation. The City and Arts Commission are looking for an art piece that encompasses diversity, equity, and inclusion. Artists are welcome to submit proposals that conceptualize artwork in an array of sizes, types, and mediums. The proposed medium(s) should be weatherproof and appropriate to outdoor display over a sustained period. The medium should encourage public interaction and be accessible for all. Also, the medium(s) should not pose any hazard to the public or the environment and be appropriate to displace within a park.

The Commission hopes to select an artist, artist team who is willing to collaborate with and involve the Sammamish community during the project development. As a part of the RFP submission, it is important to the Commission to understand the artist’s/team’s personal and artistic approach to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts with the Sammamish community, and how their approach is relevant to the artist.

Funding Information

The budget for the project is $50,000. The budget is all-inclusive and must cover all expenses associated with the design, fabrication, artist fee, site delivery, and installation, etc. The city will prepare the site for the artist for the purpose of supporting and facilitating the implementation of the art project. Installation of the artwork could be handled by City Staff depending on the artwork.

Eligibility Criteria

This call is open to established practicing artists residing in Washington State and have experience in medium scale public art installation. Local Washington State artists with sculpture abilities, but without medium scale public art installation experience, are still encouraged to apply. Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) artists are strongly encouraged to apply.

Artwork Goals

The city aims to accomplish – primary goals with this project:

  • Showcase the city’s unique character at entrance of the park.
  • Encompasses celebration of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Interactive for all ages.
  • Be site specific and original.
  • Be inviting and aesthetically appealing.
