Safety Net Grant: Enabling Organizations and Community Groups in Massachusetts

Dated: January 3, 2022

The Brookline Community Foundation has announced a Request for Proposals for Safety Net Grant Program to enable organizations and community groups to provide, adapt, or expand vital services to the Brookline community.

Donor Name: Brookline Community Foundation (BCF)

State: Massachusetts

Town: Brookline

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 06/30/2022

Details:

Safety Net grants aim to support organizations, projects, and efforts that are providing essential services (rental assistance, food, utility payments, child care assistance, other acute financial needs, and more).  Organizations may also apply for a Safety Net grant to support unexpected operating or program expenses, such as unanticipated technology upgrades or adapting a program to meet a new or evolving community need.

The Brookline Community Foundation has a long history of meeting the needs of Brookline community members and providing support in times of high need. One of their cornerstone efforts is their partnership with the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health, which provides critical, urgent assistance to help neighbors in crisis cover the cost of essentials such as rent, food, utilities, child care, and more. In recent years and in response to the COVID-19 crisis, BCF has opened our Safety Net Grant Program to more organizations helping community members meet vital, essential needs.

Priority Considerations

In alignment with their organizational vision and grantmaking goals, as the foundation review proposals, they will give preference to community organizations and groups that are working to ensure Brookline is inclusive and equitable for all, organizations that are led by BIPOC, and/or efforts that focus on BIPOC and other vulnerable populations.

Eligible Organizations

  • Grants shall be made to or through tax-exempt organizations that meet the requirements of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code, as well as to governmental bodies and agencies serving the Town. Town Departments, Committees, and Commissions seeking funding should review BCF’s Town Guidelines before submitting an application. Faith-based organizations are eligible to apply for projects assisting the wider community and if their project does not include the promotion of religious beliefs. If an organization or project is not tax-exempt, an application may be submitted through an organization that has agreed to serve as a fiscal sponsor. If needed, BCF can assist applicants in identifying an appropriate fiscal sponsor.
  • To be eligible, an organization or group must be operated and organized so that it does not discriminate in the hiring of staff or provision of services on the basis of race, religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or disability. The foundation defines the Brookline community as those who live, work or go to school in Brookline.
  • The Brookline Community Foundation does not provide grants for travel or to individuals.

Please note: Organizations that are currently funded through other grant programs of the Brookline Community Foundation are eligible to apply.
