South Dakota artists, arts organizations, and other nonprofit groups are invited to seek grant support from the South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) to assist in funding arts projects and programs throughout the state.
Artist Fellowship Grants of $5,000 reward individual artistic excellence. Grants recognize exceptional artists; encourage creative achievement; acknowledge artists who contribute to higher standards for the arts; and assist artists in their continued development. Only well-established artists with a strong record of publication, performance, or exhibition should apply.

Activity Period
Upcoming grant funds assist in funding arts projects and programs in fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023).
Eligibility Criteria
- South Dakota Artists may apply for ONLY ONE artist grant.
- Artist Fellowship applicants must be a South Dakota resident for at least two years prior to applying (prior to March 1, 2022) and remain a resident through the end of the grant (June 30, 2023).
- If you are a past recipient of an Artist Fellowship, you are not eligible to apply for an Artist Career Development grant and may not apply for ANY artist grants for a three-year period.
- Artists seeking funds for a specific project that benefits themselves and the public should apply for an Artist Project Grant.
Artists with limited publication, performance, or exhibition records should apply for the Artist Career Development Grant rather than the Fellowship. Fellowships are intended to reward artists who demonstrate outstanding professional records of accomplishment.
Ineligible
- If you are a past recipient of an Artist Fellowship, you are not eligible to apply for an Artist Career Development grant and may not apply for ANY artist grants for a three-year period.
- Funding will not be granted for academic research or formal study toward an academic or professional degree.
- Students pursuing high school diplomas or graduate or undergraduate degrees are not eligible.
- South Dakota Arts Council board members, staff, and grant review panelists are not eligible to apply for Artist Grants.
