#SAYHERNAME Justice Fund for Black Women in Ohio and Pennsylvania

Dated: September 23, 2022

New Voices for Reproductive Justice has launched the #SayHerName Justice Fund to help support Black mamas, women, girls and gender-expansive folx who live at the intersections of violence, its devastating impact on families and communities, and the need for basic essential items.

Donor Name: New Voices for Reproductive Justice

State: Ohio and Pennsylvania

County: Cuyahoga County (OH) and Allegheny County (PA)

City: Philadelphia

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: Ongoing

Size of the Grant: up to $1000

Details:

New Voices for Reproductive Justice presents the #SAYHERNAME Justice Fund, which will help to cover sudden expenses associated with sudden/tragic loss, for Black women and their families who have been impacted by gun violence and gender-based violence. They aim to assist families with final arrangements, living expenses, daily necessities, and mental health care. In addition, they are aiming to assist folx who have been impacted by abortion restrictions due to state-sanctioned and patriarchal violence.

This Fund will help to cover the expenses for Black women and their families who have been impacted by state-sanctioned violence, intimate partner violence, gun violence and gender-based violence. When these tragedies happen, there is an immediate financial need to cover the cost of funerals, rent, food, childcare, missed work time, therapy, transportation and so much more. In the instance of violence and in general, their constituents need basic necessities such as diapers, baby wipes and menstrual products as well as help to cover expenses related to their health and well-being. These issues are Reproductive Justice issues, as it threatens the safety and complete well being of black women and folx and their children. Black people can not raise their children when their existence is in jeopardy. Black girls can not live full and healthy lives if their lives are cut short. Black mothers need access to mental health resources to put back the pieces of the lives they once knew before being shattered by tragedy. Although loss can be great and no dollar amount is on the value of human life, New Voices wishes to provide some relief during a time of bereavement and/ or recovery.

Funding Information

The fund will award up to $1000 for funeral costs, up to $500 to help supplement the cost of living expenses (rent, mortgage, etc.), up to $500 for mental and physical care (therapy/ wellness sessions, copays, meds, etc), up to $250 for abortion care (abortion services) and $100 for immediate necessities (diapers, wipes, menstrual, food, etc.).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be located in the Greater Philadelphia area, Cuyahoga County (OH), and Allegheny County (PA).
  • Must demonstrate an immediate need due to sudden loss of life or income as a direct result of gun violence, intimate partner violence, or gender-based violence; or demonstrate harm caused by abortion restrictions.
  • The individual impacted must be a Black mama, womxn, femme, girl, or gender-expansive person.
  • The trauma has caused a negative financial impact on the family due to loss of life and/or income.
