Submit Applications for Community Food Ownership Grant (New York)

Dated: October 17, 2022

The City of Buffalo ARP seeks applications for local, experienced organizations to establish and maintain community food gardens for residents in disproportionately food insecure areas across the City.

Donor Name: City of Buffalo

State: New York

City: Buffalo

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 11/22/2022

Size of the Grant: $100,000

Details:

This program is intended to increase the availability of nutritious foods in low-income areas and build the capacity of local urban agriculture serving food insecure residents. There must be an infrastructure in place to maintain the garden(s) over a multi-year period, develop an education component suited to the residents of that community so that interventions are proportionate and reflective of the communities’ needs and cultural make-up.

Key Performance Indictors (KPIs)

Applicants must:

  • Identify at least 5 and no more than 15 vacant lots owned by the City of Buffalo or other entity that is willing to transfer ownership to the applicant for the purpose of establishing a community food garden on the lot. Lot selection is subject to land use planning review by the City
    • Lots located within areas identified as High Need in the latest Priority Needs Ranking Map will be prioritized for awards.
    • Lots must be city-owned unless Applicants provide a certified letter demonstrating a commitment of sale by the property owner
    • Lots must be vacant and zoned to allow for gardening activities. Applicants can verify this status using the City of Buffalo Property Viewer
  • Ensure that all the gardens are serving a community that has experienced a disproportionately negative impact from COVID-19. The RFA Guidance document offers more information on distinguishing between impacted and disproportionately impacted classes
Demonstrate how community volunteer recruitment and training will ensure that residents served are also residents that will participate in the gardening program
  • Ensure that 100% of individuals served are City of Buffalo residents
  • Ensure that participants who do not speak English as a first language have access to staff or volunteers who can assist them in the language they speak
  • Commit to maintaining the gardens for a period of at least 5-years

Funding Information

The minimum award amount is $100,000; however, applicants are eligible to request funding up to the total allocation of $500,000.
