Details:

The Constellations X California Fellowship aims to disrupt harmful narratives of domination and extraction and tell the powerful stories needed to shift culture and worldviews to interdependence.

As part of the Constellations Culture Change Fund and Initiative, and the California Arts Council (CAC), this 18-month fellowship was created to invest in the diverse Artists and Culture Bearers – committed to their artistic practice and uplifting the voices and experiences of their communities that weave a narrative of interdependence and regeneration.

The fellowship is only open to Artists and Culture Bearers working and living in California; specifically the 0-25% quartile of the Healthy Places Index.

The Constellations x California fellowship is designed to increase the CAC’s areas of impact:

  • public health awareness messages to stop the spread of COVID-19
  • public awareness related to water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, and emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery
  • civic engagement, including election participation
  • social justice and community engagement.

Funding Information

  • The Constellations Fellowship, housed at the Center for Cultural Power, is an 18-month experience that runs from February 2023 through July 2024.
  • Fellows will receive a full-time salary of $120K (at the end of the 18 months) and health insurance, a 401k, and other generous benefits through the Center for Cultural Power to support artists’ livelihood and creative freedom.
  • Partner Organizations of your choice will receive a grant of $50K to support operational costs.

Fellow Criteria

  • The Center for Cultural Power is looking for Artist Disruptors and Culture Bearers who meet the following criteria:

    • All Californians can apply
    • Diversity in artistic discipline: visual arts, literary arts, music, tv and film, performing arts, traditional arts, etc.
    • At least 2 of the 4 fellows chosen will be Culture Bearers.
  • The fellowship seeks Artist Disruptors and/or Culture Bearers that actively center:
    • Craft/Cultural Practice: dedicated to their artistic craft or practice, committed to racial/cultural equity and justice, and centers the liberation of oppressed communities
    • Collaboration: Have experience in transformative artistic practice connected to community engagement. Have experience working with partner organizations and/or community members to advance social impact or community benefit
    • Community Relationship: Have worked deeply with and/or come from directly impacted communities
    • Transmuting Knowledge: (if applying as a Culture Bearer) Have experience in transmuting ancestral knowledge or practice between generations
    • Narrative Impact: Have experience telling stories and implementing projects or practices that uplift community voices and shift narratives and worldviews.
