2023 Prix COAL Prize: An Edition on Plants

Dated: January 9, 2023

With Plant! the 2023 COAL Prize invites artists from around the world to sow the seeds of creation and action, to germinate new research and experimentation, so that an inventive and resilient plant thought can sprout, capable of making the world of after.

Donor Name: COAL

Country: Global

Type of Grant: Prize

Deadline: 03/19/2023

Size of the Grant: 12,000 euros

Details:

This Prize is a call to act, to layer, to heal, to reiterate, to hybridize. A call to feel the richness of the plant, its balances and its dynamics, from the seed to the chalice, from the molecule to the ecosystem. A call to plant and, why not, to plant oneself, because whoever does not plant himself never grows.

The COAL 2023 Prize benefits from the support of the European Union via the European cooperation program ACT – Art Climate Transition, the French Office for Biodiversity, the Museum of Hunting and Nature, the François Sommer Foundation and the LAccolade Foundation, as well as a partnership with the Center Wallonie Bruxelles/Paris and the Ateliers Médicis.

Benefits

  • The winning artist of the COAL Prize benefits from an endowment of 12,000 euros and a creative residency in the heart of the Domaine de Belval, property of the François Sommer Foundation, led by the scientific and educational teams of the museum of Hunting and Nature and those of the Domaine de Belval. Located in the town of Belval-Bois-des-Dames, in the French Ardennes, the Domaine de Belval is a veritable observatory of rurality and wildlife which welcomes each year artists selected for the interest of their contribution to renewing the vision of the relationship between humans and their natural environment.
  • The artist who wins the Special Jury Prize receives an endowment of 3,000 euros.
  • The winning artist of the NOVA_XX mention is invited by the Center Wallonie-Bruxelles/Paris to exhibit at the international biennial NOVA_XX 2023, which will be held from December 2023 to February 2024 at the Center Wallonie Bruxelles in Paris and Outside the walls. Founded in 2017 in Brussels by Stéphanie Pécourt, director of the Center Wallonie-Bruxelles/Paris, NOVA_XX is an international biennial dedicated to the artistic, scientific and technological intricacy in feminine and non-binary fashion and in the era of 4.0.
  • The artist who won the Ateliers Médicis mention benefits from a residence in Clichy-sous-Bois/Montfermeil, in connection with the regional forest of Bondy. The Ateliers Médicis welcome artists from all disciplines in residence and support the creation of works conceived in connection with the territories. They promote or organize encounters between artists and residents.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Ten artists are nominated by a selection committee made up of professionals for their project submitted as part of this international call for applications. The COAL Prize and its special mentions are awarded among these ten projects by a jury composed of representatives of partner organizations and personalities from art and ecology.
  • In addition, all applications considered by COAL and the selection committee make it possible to promote artists and projects that may be solicited or promoted according to other opportunities and actions carried out by the association and its partners.
