Funded organizations will identify all resident sudden and unexpected infant (Component A) or infant/child (Component B) deaths, review cases through their Child Death Review process, compile and enter case information into the National Fatality Review Case Reporting System, and analyze data to calculate incidence rates, identify disparities between subpopulations, and inform prevention activities, including reducing disparities.
Outcomes Recipients are expected to achieve the following short and intermediate outcomes during the period of performance.
Component A and B
- Increase in high-quality, timely data for SUID/SDY, including information on disparities and SDOH, for program improvement and public health purposes
- Increase in the number of implemented policies and practices to standardize and reduce inequity in investigation practices, including review of medical records, scene investigation and autopsies
Component C
- Increased opportunities for networking, cooperation, and data sharing with communities disproportionately impacted by sleep-related infant deaths
- Increase in implementation of community participatory, data-driven prevention strategies for disproportionately impacted communities
Target Populations
The populations of focus for this funding opportunity are all persons at risk of sudden and unexpected infant (Component A) and infants and children (0-18) (Component B) deaths in a given jurisdiction. These groups will benefit directly from a reduction in deaths. Applicants are required to include a description of the communities that are disproportionately affected by unexpected infant (Component A) and child death (Component B) in their jurisdiction. Component C recipients will be awarded funds to develop and implement safe sleep strategies in defined communities that are disproportionately impacted by SUID.
