FDA, Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has developed a multipronged strategy designed to limit resistance arising from the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals, while continuing to ensure the availability of safe and effective antibiotics for use in animals and humans.
Scope
Applicants could focus their education and outreach plan on:
- One specific food-producing animal species (cattle, swine, chicken, turkey) or food-producing animals more generally.
- Providing education and outreach to veterinarians/veterinary students or developing information that supports implementation of stewardship plans (e.g., training modules, develop guidelines/protocols for treating, preventing, controlling disease in animals, including information on dose and/or duration of use, develop breakpoints for antimicrobials approved for use in animals).
- Providing education and outreach to encourage animal producers to work with veterinarians and to understand the importance of judicious use of antimicrobials.
- Providing education and outreach to animal producers on alternative agricultural practices that may reduce antimicrobial use in food-producing animals.
Goal
Once complete, the applicant will have established a method for:
- Identifying key stakeholders for targeting educational and outreach efforts on antimicrobial stewardship in food-producing animals.
- Provide recommendations on how the key stakeholders could improve judicious use and implement antimicrobial stewardship.
- Provide a recommendation for an outreach and education plan for the targeted stakeholder group(s)
- Upon CVM concurrence, the applicant will distribute the educational materials to that group
