The California Creative Corps is an outreach and engagement campaign designed to increase awareness around environmental issues such as water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, and emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery; as well as civic engagement, social justice and public health.

Details:

Upstate California Creative Corps, a newly launched grant program which places artists in service to communities across nineteen counties in Northern California – and get paid for it.

Nevada County Arts Council has been selected as the Administering Organization (DBA “Upstate California Creative Corps”) for the Upstate Region, responsible for distributing $3.38 million in grant funding across nineteen counties.

Categories

Applicants may apply for one among three grant categories:

  • Individual Artists and Culture Bearers working solo or in small groups, having no affiliation with an agency or formal organization.
    • Individual artist and culture bearer applicants may apply for $5,000-$30,000 with group applicants being eligible for $5,000-$60,000. (20% of a grant may be used for program expenses, such as art supplies, rentals, etc.
  • Community Residencies
    • ensuring collaborative efforts in building awareness and engagement processes. Arts organizations, social service organizations and units of government, including Tribal authorities, who wish to employ artists and culture bearers are invited to apply. Multiple agencies collaborating is encouraged.
    • Applicants may apply for $15,000-$150,000. 20% of the grant award may be used for administrative costs and costs associated with program design and implementation. 80% of funds must be used to hire individual artist(s) and/or culture bearer(s).
  • Regional or Multi-County Coalitions
    • that create systems and processes with a high sustainability quotient. Deep engagement with government agencies, including tribal authorities, should be an essential feature of programs at this level. Matching funds are encouraged but not required.
    • Applicants may apply for up to $250,000. 20% of the grant award may be used for administrative costs and costs associated with program design and implementation. 80% of funds must be used to hire individual artist(s) and/or culture bearer(s).

Total Allocation: $3,384,043.20

  • Individual Artists / Culture Bearers – $5,000-$30,000
  • Groups of Artists / Culture Bearers working together – $5,000-$60,000
  • Community Residencies – $15,000-$150,000
  • Regional or Multi-County Coalitions – up to $250,000 Grantee

Activity Period

June 26, 2023–June 25, 2024

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must live in, work in, or serve one of the following Upstate Region counties: Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity and Yuba. If applying as individual artists or culture bearers, the lead applicant must be aged 18 or over, and live in, work in, or serve one of the Upstate Region counties listed above. They do not need a fiscal sponsor to apply. If applying as a unit of government, including a Tribal authority, or a social service entity or nonprofit organization (both arts-and non-arts-based) the lead applicant must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • 501(c)(3) organization as applicant or fiscal sponsor – Nongovernmental applicant organizations must demonstrate proof of nonprofit status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or section 23701d of the California Revenue and Taxation Code.
  • Local government – A unit of municipal or county government; or a Tribal authority.
  • Applicant organizations using fiscal sponsors – An applicant organization that is without nonprofit status must use a California-based fiscal sponsor with a federal 501(c)(3) designation to apply for funding. For-profit businesses and individuals may not use a fiscal sponsor to apply to CAC organizational grants. Types of applicant organizations eligible to apply using a fiscal sponsor include, but are not limited to artist and culture bearer collectives, guilds, and 501(c)(6) organizations. A Letter of Agreement between the fiscal sponsor and the applicant organization must be signed by a representative from both parties and submitted with the application. A blank signature field will not be accepted. If a grant is awarded, the fiscal sponsor becomes the legal contract holder with Nevada County Arts Council, DBA Upstate California Creative Corps.
  • A fiscal sponsor change is not permissible during the Grant Activity Period, except in extenuating circumstances based on staff assessment.
