State: New York

City: New York City

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 05/12/2023

Size of the Grant: up to $100,000

Grant Duration: 1 year

Details:

Applicants must propose place-based projects to design, produce, and install creative lighting projects on commercial corridors. Proposals should respond to local conditions and opportunities related to lighting, such as concerns of insufficient street lighting at night, poor perceptions of safety, an absence of placemaking activities, and other objectives related to business support and commercial revitalization. Projects are also encouraged to incorporate elements related to district marketing, streetscape enhancements, design innovation, or other quality of life improvements. Projects must be implemented on commercial corridors where there is substantial storefront business activity.

Focus

The Commercial District Lighting Grant is focused on improving lighting conditions on commercial corridors through creative lighting projects. Projects need to respond to local challenges and opportunities related to streetscape lighting, and must broaden the appeal and enhance the quality of life of commercial districts. Funding may be used for any activities or improvements related to implementing lighting projects on commercial corridors. Grantees will be required to secure all necessary permissions/approvals from relevant public or private property owners.

Desired outcomes of this grant include:

  • Increased foot traffic for local businesses, especially at night
  • The development of innovative and creative lighting systems and tools for future use citywide
  • Improved perceptions of safety on commercial corridors
  • Enhanced sense of place and improved quality of life for merchants, shoppers, and residents in commercial districts
