Abell Foundation accepting Applications for Regular Grants (Maryland)

Dated: June 6, 2023

The Abell Foundation awards grants to nonprofit community partners working to improve the quality of life in Baltimore.

Donor Name: Abell Foundation

State: Maryland

City: Baltimore

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 07/15/2023

Size of the Grant: $10,000

Details:

The Abell Foundation is committed to improving health, economic, and educational outcomes in Baltimore City so that all people can thrive.

Types of Grants

They typically award the following types of grants:

  • Seed funding for start-ups, pilots, and research initiatives aimed at finding innovative solutions
  • Support for ongoing projects that provide much-needed services and/or show evidence of strong outcomes
  • Capital grants that support new construction, renovation, purchase of property, and/or capital equipment
  • General operating support
  • Outreach and advocacy efforts to develop, promote, and advance policies that address systemic challenges and/or create new opportunities.

Focus Areas

  • Health & Human Services
    • The health of a community can only be as strong as the well-being of its people. They support efforts to reduce racial disparities in health and wellbeing by providing Baltimore City residents with equitable access to food, housing, healthcare, and legal services. They fund organizations that provide direct services, advocate for more equitable policies and systems, and lead public health initiatives.
  • Community Development
    • They encourage initiatives that attract resident investment in neighborhoods, promote sustainability, increase economic development opportunities, and nurture entrepreneurial talent.  Their aim to increase the livability of neighborhoods, the number of residents, the number of jobs, and the size of the tax base. They are interested in programs that address concentrated poverty, racial wealth disparities, and tie the economic health of Baltimore City to the region.
  • Education
    • They believe Baltimore’s children and youth deserve equitable access to Educational opportunities that allow them to thrive in careers and in life. They have a strong commitment to the City’s PreK-12 public education system and the nonprofit partners that support these students.
  • Workforce Development
    • A trained and skilled workforce is essential to Baltimore’s health and economic growth. They support programs that train low-income, unemployed, and underemployed job seekers and help them find and keep jobs that pay family-sustaining wages.
  • Criminal Justice & Addiction
    • People with criminal records and people who use drugs face similar but distinct challenges related to punitive policies and stigma. They work to enhance public safety and public health and find better ways to serve these populations. They are interested in programs and policies that reduce violence in their communities and improve the continuum of care for people who use drugs. They work to increase the impact and effectiveness of violence reduction programs and harm reduction services through research and support of innovative service models.
  • Environment
    • They support programs aimed at achieving a cleaner, healthier Environment and protecting and preserving the natural resources of Baltimore and Maryland. They seek to ensure environmental health and justice, recognizing that Black neighborhoods and low-income residents often bear disproportionate health burdens from environment pollution and benefit last from environmental technology and innovation.
  • Arts
    • Arts can spur creative approaches to community cohesion, social change, and cognitive growth. They support opportunities to strengthen existing cultural arts organizations and emerging arts groups, with a focus on capital projects that enhance programming in underserved communities in Baltimore.
