The Shine On SF Action Awards is a grant program designed to enable the small but mighty efforts that reconnect people to their city, each other, and the outdoors through free events like fashion shows, paint parties, and so much more.
Shine On SF Action Awards support projects that bring free, recurring community events to public spaces in San Francisco. Projects from past awardees have organized free exercise classes, movie nights, and gardening and clean-up days in public spaces. Any SF resident or SF-based business or community group can apply to receive up to $5,000 and technical assistance to help make their idea a reality.

- Projects must be led by an SF resident or SF-based business or group.
- The project must occur in a specific street area or public space the applicant has a connection to (ex: working or living nearby).
- The program or experience must be free to the public.
Additional Requirements
- Feasible and ready to implement – In the spirit of “action”, they prioritize projects that are poised to start quickly using the resources the award provides. In this case, this means you should be prepared to start events in August 2023.
- Recurring – They focus on small-scale, recurring projects that build community. They do not fund one time events. Involving
- Stewardship – They prioritize applications that involved aspects of “caring” for the project site. This could be a small act that feels appropriate to the project, from litter pick-ups to weeding.
- Social Benefits – They prioritize projects that foster civic trust and reconnect people to each other and the public spaces they care about.
- Economic Benefits – Projects that create economic opportunities for others are encouraged. They are particularly interested in projects that provide economic opportunities for SF-based artists, performers, youth, people of color, low-income or unemployed individuals, seniors, and/or people with disabilities.
- Equity – They prioritize applications from Priority Geographies – areas where a significant portion of residents or people who spend time in the area or location are members of a specific cultural, community, racial, or ethnic group that historically has been discriminated against, displaced, and oppressed.
- Budget – They focus on discrete projects that can be implemented with the $5,000 award this program provides, with no additional funding required. All submissions should include a basic budget – you can use this template if needed.
